The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP’s water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
DEP’s Office of Labor Relations & Discipline (LR&D) advises agency management concerning its obligations under collective bargaining agreements, adjudicates employee disciplinary matters, processes and adjudicates employee grievances, and serves as a liaison between DEP and the labor unions that represent DEP employees. Additionally, LR&D researches matters related to employment/labor law and employee discipline, works with attorneys at the Mayor’s Office of Labor Relations and the NYC Law Department on litigation related to grievances, disciplinary matters, and improper labor practice charges. LR&D also coordinates with the New York City Department of Investigation and the New York City Conflicts of Interest Board on matters within their purview.
LR&D is seeking a summer graduate intern to assist Senior attorneys with formal disciplinary proceedings, including the drafting of Notices, charges, and related case documents; attending Grievance hearings; researching applicable case law; attending Labor-management (and related) meetings; and assisting staff and management in LR&D with other tasks within the Office.
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
