The mission of the Department of Veterans’ Services is to connect, mobilize, and empower New York City’s Veteran Community in order to foster purpose-driven lives for New York City Service Members – past and present – in addition to their caregivers, survivors, and families. DVS fulfills this mission by providing New York City’s approximately 200,000 Veterans with essential services and programs focused on pivotal areas such as economic empowerment, housing security, benefits, health and wellness, and culture.
About the Role
The Burials Care Coordinator will work in the Community Services Line of Action reporting directly to the Executive Director of Benefits and Support Services. The Community Affairs Unit’s efforts are to expand and improve access to care, services, and resources delivered through the programs and software managed by DVS to support veterans and their families. The Burials Care Coordinator’s top priority is to manage the Funeral Honors Program.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Benefits and Support Services, the Burials Care Coordinator will:
• Create and maintain lasting relationships with stakeholders in the Funeral Honors Program, including owners of Funeral Homes/directors, cemetery staff, and government agencies at the federal, state and city level;
• Obtain and maintain a strong understanding and awareness of Chapter 23, Burial Benefits in Part II, General Benefits of U.S. Code – Title 38, Veterans’ Benefits;
• Execute the administrative responsibilities in support of funeral home directors seeking reimbursement for services, and include proper completion and tracking required documentation;
• Respond to and provide support to elected officials, the public, City agencies, local military unit funeral detail regarding End-of-Life inquiries;
• Assign verified cases to NYC HRA for completing the Funeral Process;
• Enter and update information into internal tracking systems on all burial-related cases referred to NYC DVS;
• Research, develop and implement programs and resources for burial services offered to the veteran community.
• Research opportunities and promote policy changes at the city, state and federal level that expands or improves the death benefits for New York City’s veterans and their families;
• Manage the Funeral Honora Program data, providing ongoing analysis and reports;
• Work across the unit and agency to develop the data tracking, key performance indicators and systems needed to support the unit’s expanding initiatives.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.
